Building for Life
Building for Life 12 replaces the original Building For Life. Although BFL12 is focused on the same issues, its focus shifts from achieving a minimum score to weeding out poor design. The use of a traffic light system with green, amber and red light scoring directs development teams and planning authorities to focus on why elements of a scheme are underperforming and whether they could be improved.
There is no national target or minimum score. Generally there will be no excuse for a red light but in some cases, such as a small-scale rural exemption development, it would be unrealistic to demand good public transport links. Each assessment should based on location and what can be expected of it.
